TOA obtains 80bn/- for telecom towers expansion

TANZANIA: TOWERCO of Africa Tanzania (TOA Tanzania) has signed a 30 million US dollar (80bn/-) financing agreement with British International Investment (BII) to build around 200 additional telecommunications sites throughout the country to bridge the digital gap.
The anticipated 200 new sites strategically placed across the mainland and Zanzibar will significantly increase coverage, particularly in rural regions, linking previously isolated populations which will help to improve the lives of up to 600,000 people.
Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, Nape Nnauye said this when gracing the event, stating that that the government is keen on collaborating with the private sector to address challenges facing the sector with a common goal to enhance accessibility of digital and communication services.
“I commend TOA Tanzania for securing the financing from BII, the investment will play a significant role in enhancing the digital economy,” he said.

Founded in February last year, TOA Tanzania focuses on owning and operating passive telecommunications infrastructure for lease to mobile network operators. TOA Tanzania Chief Executive Officer Mr Innocent Mushi said the agreement with BII reinforces their commitment to expanding connectivity and bridging the digital divide in the country.
“With BII’s invaluable support, we are wellequipped to accelerate our growth trajectory and deliver essential telecom services to underserved communities. “The design of our new sites prioritises environmental protection through meticulous site selection, utilisation of renewable energy sources, and responsible waste disposal practices,” he said.
The BII Director and Head of Private Debt, Richard Palmer said expanding digital infrastructure is critical for fostering sustainable economic development in the country.
“By focusing on rural areas, TOA Tanzania is not only promoting inclusivity but also ensuring that the benefits of technological advancements reach the most underserved communities,” Mr Palmer said.
The British High Commissioner to Tanzania, Mr David Concar, said during the event that they are delighted to witness the signing of the agreement, which will help to expand telecom connectivity and support isolated populations in the country.

Once completed, the new sites will not only extend network coverage to underserved communities but also support government digitisation efforts, foster financial inclusion, and generate employment opportunities throughout their lifecycle, from design and construction to maintenance.
