‘Twende Butiama’ Ride to celebrate Nyerere’s legacy with 1,846km journey

DAR ES SALAAM: In a remarkable tribute to Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, more than 200 cyclists from Tanzania and neighboring countries are set to participate in the “Twende Butiama” cycling event.
The event aims to honor the legacy of Tanzania’s founding father by promoting his enduring principles on education, health, and environmental conservation.
This was revealed on Thursday by the Director of Communications and Relations of Vodacom Foundation, Ms Zuweina Farah who also emphasized the company’s commitment to community development, focusing on quality education, health access, and economic empowerment for small entrepreneurs.
The “Twende Butiama” ride, which spans from September 29 to October 14, will cover 1,846 kilometers, starting in Dar es Salaam and culminating in Butiama, Nyerere’s birthplace.
She also highlighted that the journey will pass through more than 12 regions, including major urban centers and rural areas, reflecting a broad commitment to national unity and development.
On his part the head of the event Mr.Gabriel Landa, highlighted that the ride serves as a living tribute to Nyerere’s fight against the triple threats of ignorance, poverty, and disease.

He also said cyclists from Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Namibia are expected to join the event, symbolizing a shared Pan-African solidarity and respect for Nyerere’s contributions to the continent.
As part of the event’s mission, Vodacom Tanzania will promote a campaign to donate school desks, continuing an initiative that began in 2021.
He said this year, Vodacom aim to distribute over 500 desks to schools along the route, improving educational infrastructure and providing students with better learning environments.
The “Twende Butiama” ride stands as a testament to his enduring influence on Tanzania and beyond.
