‘UHI drives creativity among private players’

TANZANIA: THE recent enactment of the Universal Health Insurance (UHI) law by President Samia Suluhu Hassan is driving a surge of creativity among private insurers, leading to the development of innovative insurance products designed to reach underserved populations.
This legislative change is creating new opportunities for insurance companies to expand their offerings and improve access to coverage.
The Universal Health Insurance (UHI), which President Samia Suluhu Hassan has signed into law, has triggered more creativity among private sector players to come up with more insurance products to extend coverage to underserved population.
The Chief Executive Officer of Jubilee Health Insurance, Dr Harold Adamson, acknowledged that the UHI has created a more favourable environment for insurance companies to be creative.
“The government has facilitated a supportive framework for our operations and we are grateful to President Samia and the Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority for this,” Dr Adamson stated.
He made these comments during an event in Dar es Salaam where Jubilee Insurance launched its new campaign, “There’s Living, and There’s Living Free.”

This ambitious initiative aims to raise public awareness about the importance of insurance, particularly health insurance, by meeting people at their points of need and enhancing their understanding of investment and insurance solutions.
Dr Adamson emphasised that the campaign’s goal is to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their financial futures and long-term stability.
He also urged health service providers to set affordable prices to avoid imposing unnecessary financial burdens on health insurance companies.
“The funds in the health insurance pool belong to the members and it is crucial to use them responsibly,” he argued.
He added that through this new campaign many people will get to understand the importance of the insurance, particularly health insurance.
“Our new initiative truly reflects our commitment to going beyond the usual role of insurance. We’re not just offering services; we’re sharing valuable insights that help people make smart choices for their health and financial well-being,” he stressed.
Jubilee Life Insurance Chief Executive Officer Helena Mzena echoed this sentiment, emphasising the importance of financial literacy in securing a brighter future for individuals and communities across East Africa.
“With over 87 years of industry experience, we are committed to sharing our knowledge and insights. Our campaign aims to simplify insurance and investment, making these concepts more understandable and accessible,” Ms Mzena said.
This initiative comes at a crucial time as many individuals across East Africa face increased financial challenges.
The campaign will be rolled out across Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya with a comprehensive strategy, including an aggressive media engagement plan featuring outdoor advertising and creative radio spots.
