Uhuru torch to launch 58 projects in Mwanza

MWANZA: AT least 58 development projects, valued at over 99.3/bn/- will be launched during the National Uhuru Torch race scheduled to take place in Mwanza from October 6 to 14 this year.

Mwanza Regional Commissioner Mr Said Mtanda told reporters on Tuesday that the funding for the projects consists of 2.6bn/- from citizen contributions, 2.7bn/- from the councils, 74.2bn/- from donors and 19.7bn/- from the Central Government.

The RC said the Uhuru Torch race will also involve the commemoration of the Youth Week and the 25th anniversary of the death of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s on October 14th.

The national Youth Week that is set to be graced by Prime Minister, Mr Kassim Majaliwa, on October 10th, will bring together participants from 31 regions for exchanging skills and experience through exhibition.

“Mwanza is honoured to host the climax of the Uhuru Torch race this year. I urge residents to come out in large numbers to celebrate,” said Mr Mtanda.

He added that the region will receive the torch from Geita Region on October 6 in the Buchosa Council of Sengerema District, kicking off a 627 – kilometre run across all eight councils of Mwanza.

The climax will be held at CCM Kirumba Stadium, preceded by a Youth Forum on October 11 and 12 under the theme ‘Youth on Digital Opportunities for Sustainable Development.’

Moreover, a debate honouring Mwalimu Nyerere will take place on October 13.

“Basing on the 2024 Uhuru Torch race theme ‘Conserve Environment and Participate in Local Government Elections for a Sustainable Nation’, Mwanza region in collaboration with other stakeholders motivates the citizens to protect and conserve environmental,” he said.

The RC added that a total of 6,665,477 trees had been so far planted in the region as of April, this year.
