Why Azam-Simba clash moved to Zanzibar

DAR ES SALAAM: THE ongoing renovations at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium have prompted the Tanzania Premier League Board (TPLB) to relocate the eagerly anticipated clash between Simba SC and Azam FC to the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar.

This decision marks the first-ever Mainland Premier League fixture to be hosted at the newly renovated Amaan Complex.

TPLB Chief Executive Officer Almas Kasongo clarified that league regulations allow Mainland Premier League matches to be staged in Zanzibar when necessary, ensuring that clubs are not restricted from hosting games there.

Azam FC had initially sought to use the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium for their high-profile matches to accommodate larger crowds.

However, the ongoing renovations, part of the preparations for the 2027 AFCON finals co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, prevented this move.

Consequently, Azam opted for the Amaan Complex, emphasising their commitment to engaging a wider audience.

Despite the venue change, Kasongo reassured fans that the derby would maintain its excitement, as these matches attract significant attention from the football community across Tanzania.

“Azam had initially sought permission to use Benjamin Mkapa Stadium for their big games, including those against Simba and Yanga.

Unfortunately, they were not granted approval by the stadium authorities, leaving them no choice but to opt for Zanzibar,” Kasongo explained.

Ticket sales for the clash have commenced, with fans expected to travel to Zanzibar.

Kasongo reiterated that all necessary arrangements are in place to ensure a successful event, highlighting that promoting football development remains the ultimate goal.

This match is crucial for both teams.

Azam sit third in the league standings with 8 points from four games, while Simba are in sixth place on 6 points from two outings.

A win for either side tomorrow would solidify their position near the top of the table and boost team morale as they both aim for a title challenge.
