Zanzibar’s 5.1tri/- budget sails through

ZANZIBAR: MEMBERS of the Zanzibar House of Representatives on Friday, unanimously endorsed the 5.1tri/- budget for the 2024/2025 financial year.
Minister of State in the President’s Office (Finance and Planning) Dr Saada Mkuya Salum (pictured) moved the motion for the budget in the House followed by a relatively heated debate for one week.
The legislators keenly debated the budget with the emphasis on the implementation of various development projects.
The government on its side pledged to play its part effectively in allocating funds and supervise the implementation of projects as highlighted in the budget.
Ministers, Dr Mkuya;Masoud Ali Mohamed (Regional Administration); and Hamza Hassan Juma (State Minister- Office of Second Vice-President), condemned the ‘opposition’ for using unfriendly and mocking language against efforts being taken by President Hussein Mwinyi in building the country.
“This is unacceptable, ‘opposition (ACT-Wazalendo)’ forming the Zanzibar government of national unity (GNU) must stop mocking the development projects that are being implemented by the government under the strong leadership of President Hussein Mwinyi,” Mr Hamza emphasised.

Last week, the Zanzibar government tabled its new budget for the 2024/2025 financial year, amounting to 5.1tri/-.
he new budget brings sigh of relief to government employees as each one will start pocketing 50,000/- in transport allowance, following the directives of President Mwinyi.
Payment of transport allowance to employees follows a prolonged request from the workers to ease the rising cost of living.
The minister also announced to increase holiday allowance for all employees in public institutions (2.13bn/-) and that special considerations have also been made for employees and executives of the House of Representatives to motivate them to improve performance.
